Madagascar visa: what to expect at Ivato
Most travellers either get their visa when they land at Ivato or apply online before they fly. Here is how it works. We checked everything against official sources on 20 October 2026. Rules can change, so check the sources at the bottom of this page before you travel.
What the visa costs
- Up to 15 days: no visa fee, but a €10 administrative fee for the border check.
- 30 days: €35.
- 60 days: €40. This is the longest visa you can get at the airport.
At the airport you can pay in euros, US dollars or Malagasy ariary. The online visa costs the same as the visa on arrival.
Apply online before you fly
Madagascar's Ministry of Tourism links to the e-visa portal evisamada-mg.com. This is how it works there:
- You apply between one week and six months before you leave, and you pay by card.
- You get an electronic travel authorisation within 72 hours after your application is approved.
- Print it, or keep it on your phone for the police check when you land.
- The e-visa is a tourist visa for one entry and at most 60 days.
The portal itself warns about fraudulent websites. Look-alike sites that "help" with the e-visa can cost more than the official fee.
Or get your visa when you land
You can also apply on arrival, at the e-visa counters at Ivato. Have this ready:
- Your passport. It must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you arrive, with at least 2 blank pages.
- Your return or onward ticket.
- The fee in cash, in euros, US dollars or ariary.
Health checks: at the time of writing, all travellers fill in a health declaration and are screened on arrival. If you come from a country with a risk of yellow fever, bring your vaccination certificate.
Cash: you may bring up to 400,000 Ar into Madagascar. Declare foreign cash at customs: the airport's own FAQ says from €1,000, the UK government says from €7,500. If you carry more than €1,000, declaring it is the safe choice, because undeclared cash can be seized when you leave. More about money, SIM cards and the drive into town: Ivato arrival guide.
Staying longer than 60 days
You cannot buy a 90-day visa at the airport. If you need to stay longer than 60 days, you can apply for up to 90 days in total at the immigration service in Anosy, Antananarivo. You fill in a form there and bring proof of where you are staying and two passport photos. It costs 80,000 Ar.
